All you need is a matchbox, a small candle, a light plastic cup, and thread to create this incredible physics demonstration! 🔥
This setup shows how heat transfer by convection works: the candle flame heats the air inside the cup, making it less dense than the surrounding cooler air. This difference in density creates buoyancy, causing the cup to rise and float.
Science doesn't have to be complicated! Always ensure a responsible adult is present when working with fire.
Setup: The cup is lightly suspended over the flame by threads attached to the candle/matchbox base.
When a volcano is blocked, the pressure inside it keeps rising because magma is constantly pushing upward. Magma is hot, fluid rock filled with gas, and it cannot stay still when pressure builds. If its normal opening is closed, the magma spreads through the weaker parts of the surrounding rock. It melts new routes, widens small cracks, and can burst out through the sides of the volcano or even through the ground far from the crater. This leads to new vents, sudden blasts, and much stronger, less predictable eruptions. Blocking a volcano never stops the eruption; it only forces the magma to create its own path out.
